Dr. Matthias Opel

- Staff Scientist: Magnetism and Spintronics
- Staff Scientist: Thin Film Technology
- Staff Scientist: Representative of the Scientific Staff
- Staff Scientist: IT Services
- Staff Scientist: Data Privacy Coordinator
- Elected member of the Speaker Council (Sprecherkollegium) for the scientists of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities
Matthias studied physics at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), Germany. He received his diploma in 1995 with an experimental work on Raman spectroscopy in cuprate superconductors at the Walther-Meissner-Institut (WMI). He continued the investigation of the electronic system and its interactions in both superconducting and antiferromagnetic copper oxide materials and received his PhD in 2000.
For his postdoc, he switched the research topic to multifunctional ferroic oxides and studied epitaxial (anti)ferromagnetic thin films and multilayers. He became a permanent staff member (senior scientist) in 2006. His current research interests include oxide electronics, antiferromagnetic spintronics, and altermagnetism.
In his free time, Matthias enjoys outdoor activities like skiing or hiking.
Since 2015, Matthias is one of the four elected members of the Speaker Council for all scientists of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities.
