Condensed Matter Physics Books

The lecture notes on Condensed Matter Physics I + II have been started already in 1996. The first full version was completed in WS 2004/2005 and revised and improved in SS 2005. A further revision was made within WS 2008/2009 and SS 2009. Due to the large number of inquiries regarding a printed version of the lecture notes, their publication as a book was decided in 2011. The lecture notes on Condensed Matter Physics I + II have been published as a book by the Oldenbourg Verlag Munich in September 2012 (1st edition). For more detailed information please contact Rudolf.Gross(at)wmi.badw.de.

Festörperphysik, R. Gross und A. Marx

Brief description of the book "Festkörperphysik"
The 1st edition of the book appeared in 2012 and was out of print already after 2 years. Therefore, a second revised and extended edition was published already in 2014. This 2nd edition has been further revised and in 2017 and amended by a new chapter on topological quantum materials. The 3rd edition was published in January 2018 and the 4th in November 2022.

The modern text book gives a well-balanced introduction into the broadest a still rapidly growing field of physics. It serves as the basis for complementing special courses on topics such as superconductivity, magnetism, spin electronics, semiconductor physics or the modern field of quantum matter. Taking into account recent research results, the book addresses topical developments in condensed matter physics, in particular in fields such as nanophysics, magnetism or superconductivity. To illustrate the physical foundations and concepts of condensed matter physics, a large number of high-quality illustrations and many original data are used.  Together with the curricula vitae of influentual researchers important historical developments  are presented and their impact on modern physics is discussed. The target group of the book are bachelor and master students in physics and materials science.

Festkörperphysik. Aufgaben und Lösungen, R. Gross, A. Marx, D. Einzel, S. Geprägs

Brief description of the book "Festkörperphysik. Aufgaben und Lösungen"
Only when students are asked to solve specific problems, questions arise and problems are popping up, which the students have not been aware of before. The book complements the well-recognized book "Festkörperphysik" by Rudolf Gross and Achim Marx with 100 exercises and well-elaborated sample solutions to all relevant fields of modern condensed matter physics. With the help of detailed descriptions of possible solution approaches the book provides a consolidation and increase of knowledge to the student as well as a self-restraint of the learning material. The book supports students to develop a profound understanding of physical concepts and to overcome hurdles during finding solution pathes for solving specific problems.

The individual solution approches presented in the book are formulated in a comprehensible and clear way. They are supported by many helpful illustrations. The exercise book is idel for preparing for exams and for autonomous learning.
