Ph.D. Thesis: Investigation of Heat Transport in Expanded Perlite for the Development of a Vacuum Powder Insulation for High-Temperature Applications up to 800°C (2021)

Matthias Rottmann was doing his experimental work at the Bayerisches Zentrum für Angewandte Energieforschung e.V. (ZAE Bayern). He studied the use of expanded perlite, a highly porous aluminosilicate powder, for thermal insulation systems. By means of evacuation and addition of an infrared opacifier, he succeeded to achieve exceptionally low thermal conductivities, for example 0.013 W/mK at 400 °C mean temperature, with expanded perlite. For the development of a highly efficient high-temperature vacuum powder insulation for industrial applications, he investigated the heat transport within pure and opacified perlite powder experimentally and theoretically at temperatures between 20 °C and 800 °C, and at gas pressures between 0.01 Pa and 100 kPa.

After finishing his Ph.D he joined COHAUSZ & FLORACK Patent- und Rechtsanwälte Partnerschaftsgesellschaft mbB as a patent attorney.
