Prof. Dr. Rudolf Gross

- Director: Head of Division: Quantum Systems
- Director: Head of Division: Quantum Communication and Sensing
- Director: Head of Division: Magnetism and Spintronics
- Director: Head of Division: Superconductivity and Correlated Electron Systems
Rudolf Gross conducts research in the field of quantum matter and solid-state quantum system. He is particularly interested in quantum phenomena in superconducting and magnetic materials. He also studies transport and quantum phenomena in nano-scale superconducting and magnetic devices and their application in quantum computing, communication and sensing. Further important research directions are quantum microwave communication and the development of innovative superconducting and magnetic materials as the basis for the next generation quantum devices.
After studying physics, he received his doctorate from the University of Tübingen in 1987. Following postdoctoral positions at various research institutes including the Electrotechnical Laboratory at Tsukuba, Japan, and IBM’s T.J. Watson Research Center at Yorktown Heights, USA, he acquired his teaching qualification (habilitation) at Tübingen in 1993. In 1995, he accepted a full professor position at the University of Cologne and became director of its II. Physics Institute. In 2000, he moved to Munich where he became director of the Walther-Meißner-Institute of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities (BAdW), which is combined with a Chair position at the Technical University of Munich (TUM).
In the early 2000s he initiated the first collaborative research effort on solid-state quantum information processing in Germany and was the spokesperson of the related Collaborate Research Center 631 (2003-2015). Later on, he served on the executive committee of the cluster of excellence “Nanosystems Initiative Munich (NIM)” (2006-2018) and coordinated its Research Area on Quantum Nanophysics. From 2019 to 2025, he was spokesperson of the cluster of excellence “Munich Center for Quantum Science and Technology (MCQST)”. Together with Klaus Blaum, Immanuel Bloch, Ignacio Cirac and Raoul Klingner he initiated the "Munich Quantum Valley (MQV)" and served as the Scientific Director of MQV and the Managing Director of the MQV e.V. association (2023-2024).
Rudolf Gross is full member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities (BAdW) and the National Academy of Science and Engineering (acatech). He served on the Committee for the allocation of Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Research Awards (2016-2025) and the Appointment and Tenure Board of TUM (2013-2024), and also on various scientific advisory boards.
